Salt Processing

Salt processing in heat treating is a metallurgical process designed to alter the physical and sometimes chemical properties of materials, through controlled heating and cooling. In heat treating, salt is often utilized as a quenching medium, a means of providing a controlled and uniform heat transfer during various stages of the process. One of the strengths of salt processing is distortion control.

Austempering is a preferred heat treatment process for steel components and ductile iron because it serves to improve the mechanical properties of these ferrous metals and also minimizes or in some cases, eliminates distortion.
