Blasting

ThermTech is proud to offer blast cleaning services for post-heat treat or post-weld cleaning of Weldments. ThermTech provides this service across the spectrum of material grades and heat treat processes, as well as a “Blast Only” cleaning service when no heat treating is required.

Capability

Blasting of weldments is typically performed on either a table blaster with a maximum part diameter of 96” or a tumble blaster with a maximum volume of 36 cubic feet. In either case, a 330-grit steel shot media is used to provide optimal surface finish after blasting.

Process

The purpose of blasting after heat treatment is to remove any oxidation or scale that has formed in the forging, welding or heat treating process. During heat treating of weldments, oxidation can form during annealing, normalizing, hardening, or tempering operations depending on the particular process parameters. Blasting will easily remove this surface oxidation, making any downstream operations like plating or painting easier to perform.

Recommendations

In special cases where parts may be particularly fragile, ThermTech also has rubber belt tumble blasting or hand blasting capabilities that use a finer blast media, but these processes are greatly limited by the maximum weight and size that they can handle. ThermTech is located near several specialty blast cleaning vendors that offer specialty blast services like stainless steel blast media for specialty materials.

Please be aware that the process of blasting weldments creates an extremely active surface on the part, which allows for a thin rust layer to form, especially in humid weather conditions. If this condition is not acceptable, please inquire about post-blast rust inhibiting.
