Blasting

ThermTech is proud to offer blast cleaning services for castings.  ThermTech provides this service after many heat treat processes and for a wide range of material grades.  We also have a “Blast Only” cleaning service, which is offered for parts that do not require heat treatment.

Capability

Blasting services for castings are typically performed on either our table blaster, which has a maximum part diameter of 96”, or in our tumble blaster, which possesses a maximum volume of 36 cubic feet. In both cases, we use 330-grit steel shot media to provide an optimal surface finish after blasting.   We also have a smaller scale capability to tumble blast with 110-grit or hand blast with aluminum oxide.

Process

When heat treating castings, oxidation can form during annealing, normalizing, hardening, or tempering operations depending on process parameters.  Blasting will easily remove this surface oxidation, and can make any additional operations (such as machining) easier to perform.

Recommendations

When parts are particularly fragile, ThermTech also offers rubber belt tumble blasting or hand blasting services that use a finer blast media. For specialty blast cleaning, ThermTech is located near several trusted vendors that offer blast services using special blast media such stainless steel shot.
Please be aware that the process of blasting castings creates an extremely reactive surface on the part which greatly enhances the chances of rusting, especially in humid weather.  As this condition is often not acceptable, we offer post-blast rust inhibiting services as well.
